Lifeways of the Ohlone Indians of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Area In-Person
Join archaeologist Mark Hylkema for a walk through the Native American history of Sunnyvale and surrounding areas. Over a period of 14,000 years, the indigenous communities of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas developed a relationship with the bountiful landscape and adapted to several major environmental transitions. In this discussion, we will reflect on what it was like in our neighborhood where not too many years ago grizzly bears and the Ohlone people flourished here.
Mark Hylkema has 43 years’ professional experience in California archaeology, with an emphasis on Native American culture. He recently retired as the Supervisor of the Cultural Resources Program for the Santa Cruz District of California State Parks. He served as an adjunct professor of Anthropology at Foothill College for 11 years and has taught anthropology and archaeology courses at numerous colleges and universities.
This program is for adults and will take place in the Library Program Room. Registration is not required.
