Muslim Women and Global Feminism (Online Program) Online
This program will be presented online.
Western feminists, pundits and policymakers tend to portray the Muslim world as the last and most difficult frontier of global feminism. In this online talk, Elora Shehabuddin presents the unique and engaging history of Muslim women who, like other women around the world, have engaged in their own struggles for generations, in ways that include but also extend beyond their religious identity and religious practices. Shehabuddin will discuss the roles of colonialism, religion and Western feminism in relation to feminism for Muslim women.
Elora Shehabuddin is Professor of Global Studies and Gender & Women's Studies at UC Berkeley. Her book Sisters in the Mirror: A History of Muslim Women and the Global Politics of Feminism was selected as a 2022 Choice Outstanding Academic Title by the American Library Association and awarded the 2023 Coomaraswamy Book Prize from the Association for Asian Studies.
This event will be held online. Registration is required.
