Waacking Dance Workshop for Adults In-Person
Waacking is a street dance created by a multicultural group of gay men in underground clubs during the 1970s. Originally called “punking,” this art form was a means of freedom and play amidst a backdrop of extreme oppression against the queer community. The style is characterized by rapid arm rolls, striking motions, dramatic poses and storytelling elements. Watch an example of waacking on Instagram.
In this beginner-friendly workshop taught by Alice Hur, learn the basics of waacking. Come in clothing suitable for movement.
This program is for adults and will take place in the Program Room. Registration is not required; register to receive an email reminder. Doors will close when the program is full.
Alice Hur has been performing, competing, and teaching waacking for over a decade. Her accomplishments include winning multiple Bay Area waacking titles and placing in all-styles battles across North America. As a long-time grassroots community organizer, she has taught and led workshops throughout NorCal, Honolulu, Detroit, Nashville, Seattle, and Chicago, and is the founder of Bay Area initiatives Waack, Crackle, Lock! and San Jose Waacking. In 2025, Alice directed and produced Strike & Release, the first ever full-length waacking theater show in the Bay Area. Alice was awarded a California Arts Council Fellowship in 2023; served as a 2024 Creative Ambassador for the City of San Jose; was a selected lead artist for Bridge Live Arts’ 2024-25 Community Engagement Residency; and was presented with a 2025 Content Magazine Emerging Artist Award.
